Preparing for Independent Living Suggestions
The following are simply suggestions to help ease the transition from
foster care dependency to independent living. A positive attitude and
encouragement from caregivers will go a long way to helping the emancipating
youth toward a successful adulthood. It is emotionally difficult, for
both youth and caregiver, when a youth must go out on his/her own. Taking
an active role in the preparation of this inevitable event will lend strength
to the youth, be rewarding to the caregiver and assist them with the "letting
go" process.
- Obtain a copy of birth certificate & Social Security card.
- Enroll in a continuing education program.
- Obtain an identification with picture, i.e. driver's license or
State I.D.
- Secure medical insurance through employment or State of residents
when eligible.
- Secure a doctor & a dentist.
- Start file of important papers. This should include all medical
records and copies of a resume.
- Open a bank account and learn how to write and cash checks.
- Develop a support system - solid friendships - a good counselor
- join a recreation center - church group.
- Become aware of weaknesses and strengths. Learn new ways to have
fun and relieve stress.
- Learn safe sex practices.
- Find the best places to shop for food, clothing and furniture. Make
use of coupons and sale ads.
- Learn how to use resources such as telephone books, libraries and
maps.
- Learn bus system/obtain infomation about driver's license, auto
insurance, how to purchase a car.
- Many community colleges present an Independent Living Fair. Inquire
and attend when presented.
- Make a resume and application fact sheet - roll play job interviews
with several different people.
- Learn how to cook - safe handling of food & storage.
- Learn how to clean rooms and wash clothes.
- Learn how to budget money - do taxes.
- Find an inexpensive place to live in a safe neighborhood.
- Find a roommate to share expenses with - make sure it is someone
you like and are compatible with.
- Network with others already independently living.
- Share your feelings with a peer, an adult, counselor, teacher, etc.
about going out of your own.
Remember, everyone has ups and downs in their lives. If we didn't
have obstacles to climb we wouldn't get stronger. If you are having
problems, talk with someone and get the help and support you need
to tackle hurdles. Most people are nice and willing to lend a helping
hand!
